When to use ESD clothing?

The human body and ordinary clothing are among the biggest sources of charge. ESD garments are therefore a standard part of professional EPA workstations – they limit the build-up of static electricity on the torso and arms.

What is ESD clothing and how does it work?

Coats or overalls made of fabric with woven-in conductive fibres that shield and dissipate the charge of ordinary clothing.

When should you use it?

When handling highly sensitive components, in semiconductor and automotive manufacturing, and anywhere the workers own clothing cannot be controlled.

Types

ESD coats cover the torso and arms, ESD overalls the whole body. Sufficient coverage of ordinary clothing is essential.

Standard and system

ČSN EN 61340-5-1 treats clothing as part of the grounding system – most effective combined with ESD shoes and a wrist strap.

Use and care

The fastening must be closed – an open coat loses its effect. Wash according to the manufacturer instructions; unsuitable detergents destroy the antistatic properties. The function can be checked with ESD testers.
